Is lightning striking twice in the same place? Kommersant has sounded the tocsin, warning that once again peat bogs around Moscow are burning: “According to the Ministry of Emergency Situations, on Sunday in the region around Moscow sixteen wildfires broke out simultaneously.”
Authorities said that the fires have been extinguished, but Kommersant quoted Grigory Kuksin, of Greenpeace Russia, who refuted the good news. “In the Gus-Khrustalny district alone, five fires are burning,” Kuksin said. “The situation in the region is bad. There aren’t enough resources to put out fires or even contain them.”
The bogs currently ablaze may prefigure a return of the catastrophic wildfires that last summer coincided with a record-shattering heat wave and raged for weeks, generating lethal smog that blanketed the capital, wrought billions of dollars worth of damage and, at least indirectly, caused tens of thousands of deaths.
Disaster may well hit again. Zhivoy Zhurnal published a photo of a grim poster of unknown provenance that has mysteriously been turning up in the capital’s elevators. The poster states: “In accordance with predictions of an emergency in 2011, the threat of wildfires in the Moscow region continues.”
For now, rains are holding the smog at bay. Alarmed Muscovites may take additional comfort in the (reportedly air-conditioned) “anti-smog” centers to be established at the mayor’s orders in each district of the capital, according to Russkaya Sluzhba Novostey. Oklahoma drought is getting worse

Oklahoma’s struggle against drought deepened in June as Tulsa is facing a heat wave in July.
And the drought and heat may be affecting Oklahoma’s agriculture.
“The extraordinary heat and wind during June has taken its toll on the western half of Oklahoma, allowing the persistent drought that began last fall to intensify and spread,” said Gary McManus, associate state climatologist with the Oklahoma Climatological Survey. “The new maps released by the United States Drought Monitor reveals the ugly truth. Exceptional drought, the worst such designation in the Drought Monitor’s intensity scale, increased in coverage from 10 percent of the state last week to 33 percent (in late June). In addition to the widespread exceptional drought covering virtually the entire western one-third of Oklahoma, extreme-to- severe drought has also shifted back to the east.”
Oklahoma has been missing it normal amounts of rainfall – particularly in the west.
According to data from the Oklahoma Mesonet, the May 24-June 22 statewide average rainfall total was 1.24 inches, a deficit of 3.23 inches and the driest such period in Oklahoma dating back to 1921. Southwestern and south central Oklahoma suffered through similar rankings for the last 30 days, receiving a scant 12 percent of normal rainfall over that period. Since October 1, 2010, some areas in far western Oklahoma have received less than 6 inches of rainfall. Boise City has recorded 2.7 inches of rain in the last 9 months. Tulsa Beacon
